MRS NITA MUKESH AMBANI; is a woman who wears many hats – founder of the Reliance Foundation, Dhirubhai Ambani International School, director of Reliance Industries; owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Mumbai Indians and an incredible human!
Mrs Nita Ambani is the most influential women business leader in Asia; listed by Forbes. She is an Indian philanthropist and the wife of business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, who lives in one of the world’s largest and most elaborate private homes in Mumbai. Her jewellery collection includes magnificent pieces of jewels from the most sparkling solitaires, rarest gemstones, Polki-jadau jewellery and everything in between!
Mrs Nita Ambani’s Treasury article will be incomplete without highlighting the success story of Mrs Ambani, who has been an inspiration for many. Belonging to a humble middle-class family, Mrs Ambani took up Bharatnatyam classes from a young age and soon became a professional Bharatnatyam dancer. It was a dance performance at a cultural event when the-then business tycoon and ‘Reliance’ chairman Dhirubhai Ambani and his wife Kokilaben were impressed by Nita’s performance, that they immediately sought her as their daughter-in-law; and she became Mrs Nita Mukesh Ambani. Though married to the business tycoon Mukesh Ambani; Mrs Nita Ambani decided to do her bit for society and maintained a humble and modest lifestyle. She avoided the spotlight for a very long period and focused on raising her three children, Akash, Isha, and Anant.
Her strong belief in helping raise the standard of life of people around, spreading education and helping in the development of the rural area has made her a force to reckon with. She founded Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation School, in 2003; and under her leadership, the Reliance Foundation has launched several projects that aim towards the betterment of society!
Let me take you through a few of Mrs Nita Ambani’s business accomplishments:
After being elected to the Board of East India Hotels, Mrs Ambani made her professional debut in the world of business. She became the first female board member of Reliance Industries Ltd, and one of her largest ventures was the co-ownership of the IPL cricket team: Mumbai Indians. She also established Football Sports Development Limited to operate the Indian Super League, the top-tier football league in India.
The Swiss-based panel recommended Mrs Ambani to be one of eight individuals for the International Olympic Committee (IOC); and with this, Mrs Ambani became the first Indian woman to be elected to the International Olympic Committee. India will be hosting International Olympic Committee (IOC) session, after 40 years in 2023. Mrs Nita Ambani received the ‘Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award 2017’ from the President of India; for her initiatives on grassroots sports and is the recipient of the award for Best Corporate Supporter of Indian Sports, given by the Times of India. What an amazing woman and what an amazing lineup of achievements!
